The ongoing saga of the great storm of early January and the following series of storms with more to come continues to affect the Island. There has been an unprecedented number of days with no sailings and no let up yet in sight. Sadly, the new slip, which initially only seemed to have suffered relatively light damage in the great storm has continued to be battered and large parts are now clearly detached from the rest. It seems that most if not all of the structure will need to be replaced. The damage has been caused by underscouring as the supporting side wall has not yet been constructed and this has left the entire structure vulnerable to the very severe weather. Our second photo, on a more optimistic note sees Comharchumann Chléire staff repairing the worn parts of the booms themselves under contract to the Dept Marine. The prompt repairs to the boom system is much appreciated, they have seen an unprecedented level of use already this winter and continue to give great service, even after 110 years.
